Unique Things to Do in Tallahassee, FL

While most people likely know Tallahassee, Florida, as home to Florida State University, it’s also home to some pretty unique places. Check out these unique things to do in Tallahassee.

Lichgate on High Road

Step into a world straight out of a fairy tale at Lichgate on High Road. Hidden between student apartment complexes at Florida State University is a three-acre green space with an English Tudor-

styled cottage. The home was built by Laura Jepsen, a former literature professor at the college after she spotted a Live Oak standing in the center of beautiful pasture. Upon seeing it, she fell in love and purchased the land, and built the small home.

The house was built with the same stone that was used in the steps of the Old State Capitol Building and the paneling is cypress that was taken from the swamps near Tallahassee. In addition to the cottage, you can also relax and read a book in the Shakespeare Garden or meditate in the labyrinth.

Lichgate on High Road is located at 1401 High Road. The driveway to the home is slightly hidden, so look for a white post with “Lichgate” engraved on it. The post is on the east side of High Road close to Tharpe Street. Continue reading Unique Things to Do in Tallahassee, FL

Wildlife Collision Safety: Tips to Drive Safely

Most of us have been in a terrifying situation where an animal darts out in front of our vehicles. Our natural response might be to freeze up or quickly swerve to avoid hitting them, but those reactions could do more harm than good. We’ve compiled a list of safety tips for how to avoid collisions with wildlife.

Look Ahead

To avoid potential collisions, you should constantly be scanning the road ahead of you in order to spot wildlife in enough time to stop your vehicle. However, if you weren’t looking ahead, once you spot an animal, quickly scan the road and shoulder ahead of you. Look for anything that may hinder you from stopping if you had to merge onto the shoulder, and pay attention to any oncoming traffic. Never cross the yellow line when another vehicle is approaching.
