La Tiendita
If you’re tired of the inauthentic Mexican food that seems to have saturated the United States, head over to La Tiendita at 1840 Monroe St. in Tallahassee. Its food is as authentic as Mexican food gets. Start off your meal with tamales rojos, tamales de rajas, yucca frita with jalapeno aioli dip, or chips with your choice of bean, cheese, choriqueso, and guacamole dips. If you make it in for breakfast, try out the huevos revueltos, huevos a la Mexicana, or huevos rancheros.
The burritos are available with beans, steak, chicken, marinated pork, or in vegetarian form. The restaurant has some unique taco options, including cow cheek tacos, tripe tacos in regular and deep-fried versions, and hibiscus tacos. The fajitas are available in chicken, steak, shrimp, or combinations and include onion, bell pepper, tomato, rice and beans, and corn or flour tortillas. La Tiendita has special menus for vegetarians and children, so ask about those options if you or one of your guests fit the bill.
Chuy’s
Chuy’s, at 904 E. Lafayette St., is one of the best Mexican restaurants in Tallahassee. The customers adore their Big As Yo’ Face burritos, which come in bean and cheese, seasoned ground beef, roasted chicken, and fajita chicken or beef versions. The house specialty is a steak burrito in a flour tortilla, which includes Monterey Jack cheese, hatch green chile sauce, refried beans, and Mexican rice. The Chuychangas are the talk of the town. They are flour tortillas full of roasted chicken, cheese, cilantro, and green chiles, deep-fried and covered in sour cream and Chuy’s signature sauce.
If you want to go with a lighter meal, consider the Mexi-Cobb salad, which includes fajita chicken, cheese, green chiles, avocados, and tomato. The kids’ menu includes mini burritos, kids’ enchiladas, and kids’ cheeseburgers. If you want a more adult menu option, go with the Shiner Bock marinated fajitas, which include your choice of beef, chicken, or both, along with Serrano peppers, lime juice, secret spices, grilled onions and peppers, lettuce, guacamole, sour cream, pico de gallo, cheese, flour tortillas, Mexican rice, and refried beans.
