Wildlife Collision Safety: Tips to Drive Safely

Most of us have been in a terrifying situation where an animal darts out in front of our vehicles. Our natural response might be to freeze up or quickly swerve to avoid hitting them, but those reactions could do more harm than good. We’ve compiled a list of safety tips for how to avoid collisions with wildlife.

Look Ahead

To avoid potential collisions, you should constantly be scanning the road ahead of you in order to spot wildlife in enough time to stop your vehicle. However, if you weren’t looking ahead, once you spot an animal, quickly scan the road and shoulder ahead of you. Look for anything that may hinder you from stopping if you had to merge onto the shoulder, and pay attention to any oncoming traffic. Never cross the yellow line when another vehicle is approaching.

Also, keep in mind that many animals travel in packs. If you see one, there’s a good chance that more are around that you might not be able to see.

How to Keep Your Brakes Maintained

We rely on our brakes more than we realize. In fact, we take them for granted. Every time we press them, they work, but what happens if they start to go bad? Taking them to a mechanic is a good step, but it’s not the only thing you can do to ensure that your brakes are properly maintained.

Pay Attention to Details

When your brakes start to go bad, you’ll be the first to notice the small signs. Be sure to not discount them because they may be easy to overlook in the beginning. If you experience any vibrations, high-pitched squealing, or if it takes more force to stop your vehicle than it has in the past, you’ll want to head to a mechanic for a check.

The squealing sound comes from the brake pads wearing out, which is the first line of defense in your braking system. If you ignore that sound, you could be causing more damage and create a more expensive repair.  Continue reading How to Keep Your Brakes Maintained
